Great news that three of our colleagues are finalists in a total of four categories in the Investment Week 2021 'Women in Investment' Awards!
Stagflation is not so much a threat of the future, but the reality of here and now. At present, the ‘stag’ part of this is a slowing of growth in the post-lockdown confusion, rather than a lurch back into contraction. That is the way that it should stay, but there are no guarantees about this.

The cost of the government’s borrowing is as close to nil as makes precious little difference. At the time of typing, the yield to maturity of a gilt maturing in five years’ time is 0.33%. If we apply that rate of interest to the entire market, just for the fun of it, we arrive at an annual cost of a paltry £6.6bn. That is not a lot.

Asia as a whole has had a bad pandemic. This has sped up the political cycle, but what is needed is a step change in vaccinations. Every journey, as we know, is meant to start with a single step. There are signs that some are at last putting on their shoes. This is a part of the world from which we expect great things. It has not delivered throughout much of 2021; next year can only be better.

Last week’s central bank announcements went largely as expected, with some more incremental increases from the BoE, ECB and Federal Reserve. The main market mover this week will be the US inflation data tomorrow. The market is pricing in around 5% as the rate of annual increase. That is a 0.3-0.4% increase to the core month-on-month rate.
